About us
With running groups popping up in communities all over the United States, it is a change of pace to see one coming to an area of Los Angeles that has been historically underserved until recent years. Highland Park Runners (HLPR) is the brainchild of Highland Park resident and runner, Chris Ramirez, who used running as a means to overcome a tough time in his life. Chris lives and runs by the motto, “Believe in yourself, because I believe in you,” which is at the foundation of the community HLPR seeks to build. Before launching HLPR, Chris connected with Clayton Rosa, Glassell Park resident and fellow runner, who shared his vision for inspiring others to live a healthier and more fulfilling life through running. In early July they began hosting weekly runs every Tuesday evening and average more than 40 runners every week.
Chris and Clayton, along with their HLPR pacers – Diane Rivera, Jonathan Salvador and Maria Briseno – offer participants encouragement, coaching, practical advice, and plenty of fun while pursuing their goals. It is a very well-known phenomenon that when individuals run together they stay motivated, train harder, and run better than they ever thought possible. Some of the members of HLPR are experienced and fast runners while others are just starting to run. However, all the runners share something in common: they all love to run and know that running can be fun. Fully supporting the efforts of HLPR is Office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Councilmember Jose Huizar, 14th District and LAPD Northeast Division Community Relations. Officer Sgt. Myra Correa invited HLPR to help train youth from the neighborhood in the proper mechanics of running in an effort to encourage local youth to adopt fun and healthy activities.
