About us
HISTORY:
The vegetable garden began in 2008 with donations for seeds and bedding plants. Garden space is donated by the First Baptist Church and water is provided by the city. The garden is producing an abundance of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, green beans, sweet corn, beets, peppers, potatoes, eggplant, okra, peas, cabbage, brussels sprouts, watermelon, onions, herbs. 2,550 pounds of fresh vegetables from a 50’ x 100’ plot was harvested in 2013. A year later the garden expanded to two acres and production quadrupled. Once the fruit is in production, expected harvest should exceed 40,000 pounds. In 2015 volunteers built a shelter house, and a 30'x48' high tunnel with geothermal heating and cooling system using passive energy. It incorporates a 2,200 gallon water catchment system.
HELP US GROW
Our vision is to establish an ecological orchard with an aesthetic atmosphere to produce nutritious foods. It will also serve as a community demonstration and educational space. Learn water catchment, plant guilds, hugelkultur, organic, sustainable and permaculture practices. Come visit or participate. The Orchard includes fruit trees like cherry, apple, pear, peach and plum; Understory plants and shrubs like grapes, blackberry, raspberry, elderberry, goji berry and gooseberry. Asparagus, rhubarb, herbs, and nutrient enriching plants, like sage and comfrey.
Herb Garden
The herb wheel is a circular garden where we can breathe deep and merge with nature. It is a sanctuary for tranquillity and meditation interplanted with native herbs.
The basic layout reminds us to live in good relationship with all life.
