This is being written after our $30k+ project has been left half finished and abandoned by Griffin Construction with no workers for nearly five weeks. We have no usable master bedroom or bathroom. We tried getting the company to finish the job, then emailed and tried the BBB resolution system to come to a resolution with Griffin Construction that would make up for loss we face due to their failure to honor the contract. Griffin construction would not respond. Griffin Construction's failure to honor their contract is going to cost us a substantial amount of money in damages fixing their improper work and completing the job they were hired and paid to complete. We first met with Robert Griffin of Griffin Construction in February 2016. We discussed the fact that another contractor had left us high and dry, costing us a lot of money, time and anguish, and that we were hesitant to hire another contractor. They assured us they were different and promised us beautiful results as their portfolio showed. They did an excellent job conceptualizing our final product. They created dazzling visuals which would impress anyone. Their website and Houzz site noted membership in the National Kitchen and Bath Association and Greater Houston Builder's Association, which gave us added confidence. We were on track to hire them until a $3k error in their bid left them too far over budget. Robert wrote a long email begging us to hire him [excerpts follow]: "I really want to build your bathroom, and I feel like it’s my fault I’m not in the middle of it already..I made the math error, no one else.. I could say I just really want to work with you both and how wonderful it will be, but the truth is I just really want to build our vision..I understand exactly what you want, and relate completely to the reservations you may have with this kind of investment. On that I certainly pull no punches, I’ll deliver." "We can build something amazing, or you can hire someone to get pretty good...Anyone who charges less, is giving you just that. Less...You can spend twice as much and it won’t matter. I’m the best, Your project will be the best, whoever else you may want to use won’t do what I will. They can’t...Let’s get moving, I can send you a b.s. Offer with more customer provided materials, or let you regret hiring someone else and just sell you materials, but I won’t. Let’s build this, or not. You’ll never regret it." Unfortunately, we believed every word and on March 25th, we entered into a contract with Griffin Construction to remodel our master bedroom and bathroom. The framing went smoothly, but when my husband noted an issue with the framing of the door, it was ill-received. We were told to step back and not be involved in any oversight. We did just that and didn't comment when unlicensed hourly workers moved plumbing and electrical. We had a specific payment schedule on when payments would be due, Robert asked for the payment that was due after sheetrock install be made early before the work was complete. He said he needed to make payroll. When we expressed hesitancy at giving the payment before it was due, we were met with frustration and insistence that he needed the money then for the job to continue. We felt we had no other option so we gave them the check early. When sheetrock was "complete" we walked through the space and were horrified. Multiple sheet rock seams were visible from the floor to the ceiling and there wasn't a 2x2ft section on any of the walls that didn't have noticeable flaws. It was clear that the person doing the work lacked the attention to detail necessary and that no oversight was given to correct these issues before the walls were painted. We informed Robert and he sent the same individual back out to fix the problems. He spent over a week re-doing areas, again with no oversight, as the walls were painted a second time and they looked only minimally better. When Robert finally came out to see it, he agreed and said that the work would need to be corrected (again) but that they would do it later in the project. Floor tile installation was next. When we told Robert we wanted a 1/16th grout line on the wood look tile so it would be more realistic, he told us that would require floor leveling at over $1k. We were surprised by this because floor leveling compound was listed on the bid, and there was no way to avoid having to level the floor even with a larger grout line. We agreed to the change order anyway, as there was no other option and we wanted to floors to be level and look correct. Subs levelled floors and laid the tile and it seemed to go fine, though the tile would have been laid at the incorrect pattern had my husband not come home over lunch and caught them on the third row. Again, an issue of oversight. Cabinet install was next on the list. The cabinets were RTA's (ready to assemble). Their "carpenter" was sent to install them. It took about three weeks for the cabinets to be installed, during which the plumbing and electrical they had already installed were deemed to be in the wrong place and needed to be moved. The "carpenter" moved the electrical and their hourly paid unlicensed worker came back out to move the plumbing. No communication was given to us as to why progress was moving so slow and items were needing to be re-done. As I work from home a lot, there were numerous times where I heard workers saying they weren't sure what to do, and complaining about the lack of oversight and sight visits from Robert, as though he just expected them to figure it out on their own. Finish work on the cabinetry (the part that makes it look good) wasn't complete but Robert insisted they be paid anyway, which we did. Since the pre-fab granite we informed the company we wanted months ago was now out of stock, we hired a third party fabricator and had the work done ourselves and took a $1k credit from the contract. That work, which was NOT done or coordinated by Griffin Construction went seamlessly. Despite the cabinets not being completely installed, the "carpenter" began working on the sheetrock which was being repaired for the third time. This baffled us, since she wasn't experienced with such work and the first person they sent hadn't gotten it right on either attempt. When my husband came home from lunch, he asked if she had much experience with sheetrock, she admitted she didn't. He asked if she knew what the markings on the wall meant that Robert had made indicating the necessary corrections. She admitted she didn't. My husband then explained what the markings meant and how to correct the sheetrock. When we expressed concerns to Griffin Construction multiple times about their lack of oversight and unskilled workers, they wouldn't respond. We were later told that they didn't respond to emails they didn't like. When my husband pushed the issue and asked for them to oversee their workers or to send workers who knew what they were doing, and to please let us know a work schedule so we would stop leaving the door unlocked for them when they weren't sending workers, they deemed him "difficult" and Robert told me he would "no longer communicate with him". I was astonished at their lack of professionalism. All we were doing was asking for skilled workers and oversight so they wouldn't continue to waste time and money doing things wrong and having to fix them multiple times. Instead of offering to do their job, they lashed out at us calling us difficult and saying they were at a breakeven point and it didn't make sense for them to finish our project. He told us that so long as we didn't leave reviews, they wouldn't call permitting on the job (there were no permits pulled for their work-which is what allowed use of their unlicensed workers). When Robert ceased to answer phone calls, I tried Gregg, the owner of the business, asking to meet so we could clear the air and move forward. My call was met with arrogance and hostility. He refused to tell me if they would honor our contract and finish the job, but implied they wouldn't. We tried emailing twice since then and filing with the BBB with no response. Since it has been five weeks since workers were here, their answer seems clear. We are now left with a mess of a space that needs an excessive amount of correction and costly materials and work to complete. Every time we try to move forward in one area, it's determined that the work they need was incorrect and needs further correction. Griffin Construction may have been at a break-even point, but we are far from it. Their failure to complete the work they were contracted to do will cost us thousands more than the remaining balance of the contract. The promises from Robert's email quoted above have proven untrue. If there is one thing we regret, it is trusting and hiring Griffin Construction. It should also be noted that we just found out their stated membership in the National Kitchen and Bath Association and Greater Houston Builder's Association on their websites, noted above as a reassurance in hiring, is NOT in place. More disturbingly, upon leaving honest reviews for the company, Robert demanded it be removed then he and a friend of his left retaliatory feedback on my professional business page about me. His retaliatory and defamatory remarks have nothing to do with my ability as a real estate professional and speak measures as to his professionalism and conduct. I have documentation of this, along with additional details and communication from this company I would be happy to share as needed to back up everything in this review and more.
