About us
Derek's Custom Cakes is a one man operation, run by myself, Derek Beam. I am currently baking out of my home in Cherry Fork, Ohio. I make cakes as a side business. My full-time job is teaching. During the school year, I am a teacher by day, cake maker by night (sometimes well into the night).
I started making cakes back in 2004 when my oldest son had his first birthday. With more birthdays, the cakes got bigger, more involved, and more detailed. After many compliments about the cakes I made, I decided to start making them for other people as well. I have taken a few classes on cake decorating, but much of what I have learned has been from experimenting with cakes I have made.
I enjoy making cakes because I enjoy seeing the reaction on people's faces the first time they see their cake. There is nothing that says "you're special" like a specially made, custom cake!
