  Can anyone give me info on Cel-Fi's? Do they work well enough for the price? Are they hard to set up? We have a couple of bars of service (both 4G and 3G) outside but very patchy mobile service inside the house. I don't think we'd need to hook an external aerial to them.

  My boss has this one below, seems to do a good job. He's about 20 kms from the tower and in a similar predicament to you. He just has it sitting outside on the patio, but he's contemplating whether to connect a yagi to it. Got it organized through local Telstra shop. From memory it's restricted to 3G only on that model, and unsure about the others whether they're 4 g capable.   They work a treat for us. We do use Yagi antennae though on our houses. They do have to be matched with the signal you want to amplify. If you have 4G, you will need a 4G compatible Cel-fi. I have heard that the Telstra supplied unit is a dumbed down one. Perhaps those with more experience can clarify.

  We bought one when at a house that had zero service at the house but random 1-2 bars in the paddocks, had it on a Yagi & it worked but not great, dropped in and out all the times and wasn't reliable for Internet, so still no banking, Skype, you tube or even mms on the mobile but it was better than nothing. Hooked it up at another house & it has 2-3 bars down the driveway but zero in house, works brilliantly here, took us a bit to figure out the best place to put the boxes to maximise the service but the cel-fi here only says 2 bars but doesn't cut out as much. Was told the new version you can run a cable between the boxes to increase the Yagi strength throughout the house, which would be better for large houses. They do have an internal aerial in the box & this can cause the unit to reset itself & not use the Yagi aerial at times which causes more drop outs, a metal bucket over the box helps minimise this (very technical fix!) Yagi aerials are apparently directional and so have to be placed on their edge at the closest tower, not flat like a TV antenna, our comms guys said this is the most common issue he has had with people installing them themselves. Worth looking into them.

  We would have no Internet/mobile reception at our house if not for our cel-fi booster. We have the external yagi rfi aerial that plugs into the booster which gives us approx 2-3 bars. The little box which "spreads" the signal around house takes a bit of fiddling with to get the correct coverage. Once we had antenna pointing in the correct direction we were home & hosed. We went through a company called Powertech. They were really helpful & we haven't had any dramas since. Not fast but it does what we need it to. (Kids not on distance ed. I use to log in remotely for work). It cost us aporox $1300.

  The Cel-Fi we use in two different houses work well at both. One house gets signal to the house already and we are purely boosting the signal with no Yagi aerial. The other house gets no signal at all and is hooked to the Yagi aerial as high as possible on the roof. The second house mentioned has more problems with atmospherics etc. We have also just set up a Telstra smart antenna for the grandparents - these REQUIRE a Yagi aerial, they physically do not function without one even if your phone is receiving signal where the smart antenna is.

  Wayne Pryor also sells these and can shed more light on if the cel-fi are compatible with NGWL systems ?
