  Hello everyone. I was wondering if any members in this group have any information regarding gluten - free food restaurants in Osaka and Kyoto. Is there any type of Japanese food that is not gluten - free? I do know that coroquette, tempura, ramen and udon are not gluten-free . I did some research and found few restaurants but they are in Tokyo. This is for my husband who is gluten-intolerant. I can try to prepare our own food but we want to enjoy the local delicacies as much as we can without worries. Thanks so much for your help.

  found a few things... http://choice-hs.net/ Choice is a restaurant in Kyoto specializing in Gluten Free and Vegan food. http://glutenfree.flier.jp/life/cafeandmealmuji-394.html apparently Cafe&Meal MUJI, the little cafes in some of the larger Muji stores have stickers denoting some of their foods as gluten free. the one this person's blog mentions is right at Umeda's Grand Front Osaka mall. the person's website is in Japanese, but there's a translate button on the top right part of the website.

  Bring your own gluten free soy sauce or tamari from home. You can find it in some Japanese supermarkets; I found mine in Kyoto, but also brought some San-J packets to carry in my purse, and also brought a small Nalgene bottle to fill up with the soy sauce I bought there. Do not eat soba noodles! Unless soba is 100% buckwheat, it has gluten (wheat) added. I was told that 100% buckwheat soba noodles taste horrible, and you won't find them in Japan. I found this out when I attended a soba noodle festival in Matsumoto last weekend. This sheet of paper was a lifesaver for me on my trip: http://www.celiactravel.com/cards/japanese/ . Also, print out the Japanese names and pronunciations for wheat and barley. Barley is commonly found in miso, but was told it was in curry and other things that I thought would be gluten free. Eating gluten free in Japan was certainly a challenge, so I ate a lot of sushi and grilled fishes. We also had shabu-shabu, which they made for me without the soy sauce base. Good luck to your husband. I loved Japan, but was not happy with my gluten free food choices.
