Hi All,
hope things are going well, I've been recently attending a couple of seminars of Shotokan since I was invited by kind practitioners I accepted. I have noticed several things that I'd like to comment in a positive criticism hoping that this can be useful for someone.
I might be wrong in what I will describe so feel free to comment or criticize or correct.
1) It looks like for Shotokan Practitioners Funakoshi Gichin Sensei is the oldest Karate Master on earth, which is not true of course, Higaonna, Yamaguchi, Itosu, Matsumura, Soken, Chibana, Motobu..... we can go on and on till we reach the Chinese Masters. I hope they will look for the roots behind Funakoshi Sensei.
2) It looks like kicks with the front leg is an advance technique that they have never tried before or only few did.
3) It seems that there's only front and backward movements when they practice kumite. No 45-30-180-360 degrees?
4) Mae-geri is the only kick contemplated unless they have 20-30 year of experience to practice the others;
5) Kote Kitae, Kata Kumi Waza, Bunkai, are basically unknown by Shotokan Practitioners... Really this is the foundation of Karate
I know I sound arrogant and the kind of person who likes to complain, but I just feel the need to express my thoughts because I would like to see Shotokan Practitioners looking for their roots, to go to the place where Funakoshi came from and understand the complexity and amazing Art of Okinawa Karate. Karate is far far beyond Funakoshi and Nakayama/Kanazawa Senseis.
