OK, many of you have eased my concerns about driving down in January, for that... Thank You! I was slowly being sucked into the American paranoia vortex from friends, (most who have never even been to Mexico).
We have decided to cross at Nogales (Truck Route). I have a few questions and will number them to make them easier to refer to when answering. Thanks ahead of time:
1) Looks like the highway to take the truck route is (189... N. Mariposa Rd.). Is that correct?
2) Any recommendations of a (safe) place to stay overnight in the area? We plan to cross early in the morning.
3) What is the earliest that one can cross? I read somewhere that the border crossing doesn't open until 11:00 am.
4) Auto Insurance? I know Bill represents a few agencies... I've been hearing good things about Lewis and Lewis. I used Sanborns back in the 70s. Any comments or recommendations? I'm mostly interested in agencies that have been TESTED, anyone can put up a good website. ;-)
5) FMM? Can/should I get this ahead of time on-line or is it just as good or better to get it in Mexico? Do we BOTH need one, (we're married)? Is there a fee?
6) Vehicle Title? I've read where US tourists are required to have the actual title to the vehicle they are driving. Not sure how this could be a requirement, since many Americans NEVER own their cars. Not a problem though. Is it required? If so... is a photo copy good enough?
7) Vehicle permit? I've heard that the location to do this is 12K, 18K and as far as 130miles south of the border. Can someone please clarify this for me? Where is the best place to get it? Estimated price?
Aside from valid Passports... have I missed any other "requirements"?
