In the fall of 2014 our association management company (Riverside Management) contracted with Steve Nations Roofing & Contracting, LLC to replace the roof on our HOA unit. Later that winter I noticed that when it rained some of the water no longer ran into the gutter but off the edge into our flower beds. This never happened before so why should it be happening now. After several rains where it kept happening I took this video with my cell phone. I spoke with the president of the HOA and after a while she told me she was going to have to get the Better Business Bureau in because the roofer wasn’t returning calls. I asked her who was the roofing company and I would get them to return the calls. I put the video on YouTube and called the roofer and told them about the YouTube video. Not only did they return the call but within an hour they were here and told me how we would need to replace the gutters because the HOA wanted architectural shingles that are thicker than 3 tab shingles. After discussing it a while they said they would send someone out the next week to fix some damage done to some of the siding. Over the weekend I got to thinking about the gutter stuff and this just didn’t make sense to me so I started contacting friends that were roofers and the Cobb County building department. When I told them what was happening they said it sounded like the shingles were hanging too far over the edge. They told me if the shingles were hanging off too far not only would the rain run off but also wind could get up under the shingles in a storm and blow shingle off. They said and sent me a copy of the requirement showing the requirement for drip edge and that shingles need to be trimmed properly. As I asked more about that I learned that early in 2014 Cobb County adopted the national standard that require drip edges as part of any roof replacement and the shingles needed to be flush or within ¼ to 1 inch of the drip edge. When I got off the phone I went out and looked closer. It looked like the shingles hung off the edge way more than 1 inch so I got up on my ladder to measure them only to find that not only were they hanging way more than one inch, about 2 ½ “, but that there wasn’t any drip edge as required by the Cobb County. When I spoke with the roofing company they said it wasn’t regular practice & they would send a crew out to install the drip edge and fix the damage to the siding they had done. That was back in mid-June of 2015. Now it is July. I just spoke with Jamie again and this time they told me they won’t do it because the insurance company won’t return their calls and someone has to pay for it. So what she was saying was that even though Cobb County requires drip edge with any reroof and they need to be trimmed properly unless that is expressly stated and budgeted in the contract Steve Nations Roofing won’t comply with Cobb County regulations. I believe if this was taken to court the judge would reasonably say that any quote has to comply with the building codes of the given jurisdiction. Any cost would and should be borne by the roofer. I wonder if the other bids on the job would have complied with the building code. My only recourse, short of hiring lawyers, is to let you know how Steve Nations Roofing handles their business. If you’re considering hiring Steve Nations Roofing & Contracting, LLC from Hiram Georgia be aware of just one very unhappy person that has to live under a Steve Nations roof. Maybe before you get a quote from them you should either become an expert on: roofing, Cobb County building code and plan on getting on your ladder to check they have met the code before you pay them or get quotes from other roofer that have better ethics. Again, this is just one man’s opinion. And that’s my review of Steve Nations Roofing & Contracting, LLC from Hiram Georgia.
