About us

A row of elegant residences build on the east side of Portland Square - Seven in number with No 10 in the centre - The most prestigious of them all.
A large double fronted residence, with columns eitherside of some seven steps at the entrance.

Work on the building started in the late 1870's, stone built in true Victorian style.

The first owner was an Edward Sheldon of Cowan & Sheldon fame - this was spring of 1881 after he moved from Bolton Place Rickergate.

In 1884 after Edwards death it passed into the hands of his sister - Mrs A Evert.

We can't find any record of Mrs Everts death or any other tenant but records show Miss A M Fiddler ran a school under the name of De Bear School in 1925.

1929 records show that it was the Gregg School until 1934 when it became the Masonic Hall as we now know it.

During the last war many young and some not so young passed through the portals to undergo medical examinations for the armed services.

in 1934 the building was extended to the rear to incorporate the large function room which has been host to many a harmony board over the past 80 years. On the upper floor there is the largest of our two Masonic Temples.
The architects were two members of Bective Lodge 1532 W. Bro S. W. B. Jack and his son W. Bro S. B. Jack.

Who the original architects were is not known but if one stands across the road in Portland Square and looks at the front of the building you can see two marble pillars at each side of the door, they are topped with ornate chapiters of the Corinthian order, a lintle or canopy is over the top.
The steps leading to the entrance are seven in number.
He may well have been a Mason, or just a skilful craftsman who know his trade, we don't know, but it is coincidence that in later years the building would be the Masonic Hall
