  If you want -30+ rated gear use LL Bean, they're good for the Lower 48. In Alaska you'll want Prospector, Big Rays or Sportsmans

  If he's not going to be spending prolong time outside right from the get-go, I say its better to wait until he gets here before buying his gear. That said, definitely make sure he has a warm coat, boots, gloves, and a hat with him for day one. Big Rays and Prospectors offer and excellent selection of gear for our extreme temperatures.
