[Powder Hounds ](http://www.powderhounds.com) has some great posts about most (if not all) the resorts in Japan. They write about what the crowds are like, how English friendly they are, snow quality etc.
Suggestions on choosing a ski resort near Tokyo in early Feb? Myself and two friends are heading to Tokyo in late Jan/early Feb for two weeks and we're thinking of spending 4-5 of those days around a ski resort within 4 hours of Tokyo.
So we were just looking for suggestions for a ski resort + area to stay in. I'd say we're on a mid level budget so keeping that in mind for accommodation options. But in saying that budget options would be appreciated! In terms of skill I'd say we're at a beginner level focusing on snowboarding.

upvote for Nozawa Onsen. But, if you're thinking of doing a shorter stint (e.g. 1-2 days) I'd go for Yuzawa due to convenience. They've also had an ok start to the snow season in terms of falls (which so far has generally been a slow-starter) Check out https://snowjapan.com or http://www.powderhounds.com for some info on Japanese resorts, facilities and snow quality in English.
Japow Trip Planning Hi everyone,
I am hoping to go skiing in Japan this season. Looking at going for January and February and was wondering if anyone else on here has done such a trip and can give any suggestions or tips for planning such a vacation.
I am mainly looking for a resort that gets lots of snow (duh), allows skiing in the trees, and is backcountry accessible.
I don't really care for a party scene though a few local bars or restaurants would be nice, looking for a more authentic Japanese place where I can ski my face off.
Thanks!!

You sound like you're pretty into backcountry and off piste. Check out Hakkoda, Aomori prefecture on powderhounds.com. If you want to get away from the hordes of tourists at the big Hokkaido resorts, it has the other advantage of being very unknown. You might feel a little bit more "in Japan" compared to like Niseko, if that makes sense. http://powderhounds.com/Japan/Honshu/Hakkoda.aspx
Hey Guys,
i'm planning a backcountry snowboarding trip on Hokkaido in January.
Any recommendations, places to stay, helpful tipps, experiences, best areas to ride etc. are very welcome!
thanks in advance...

i only know the typical bowls like Niseko and Tomamu, but you can probably get some more info from these sites. http://www.powderhounds.com/Japan/Hokkaido.aspxhttp://www.snowjapan.com/japan-ski-resorts/prefecture/hokkaidohttp://www.hokkaidopowderguides.com their mention of Rishiri for backcountry skiing sounds like it could be fun. it's a dormant volcano island off the coast of Wakkanai at the northern tip of Hokkaido, normally it's famous for kelp and sea urchin during the summer months, but in wintertime it's almost completely empty other than the really adventurous types, but it doesn't really get lower than -10C (not counting windchill) so it's still cozy.
Hi, am planning to travel to Hokkaido this late December. Any recommendations? How many days? Where to go?

in that case, you have plenty of time to wander around. might i suggest something a little more touristy. before heading into Niseko for some great skiing, go to Otaru and enjoy some sushi at the famous Otaru Masazushi Honten(honten = original branch). http://www.masazushi.co.jp/shop_honten_en.html and dinner at Syotokutaishi, a famous izakaya serving a variety of sushi as well as cooked seafood. http://www.kaisen-syoutoku.com/ and on the topic of skiing, you can check out this site for some ski fanatics review of Hokkaido's powder scene. http://www.powderhounds.com/Japan/Hokkaido.aspx
