  Looking for a gym to learn some form of self defense? Hi guys! Last time I posted here asking for some recommendations, I was floored by how helpful people were. So I'm here again! A little back story: I was sexually assaulted a few years ago on the subway. (Sorry, if thats TMI, but the 1 train sucks and being a 5 ft tall lady in NYC can be a scary thing.) After this incident, I've been in therapy and working through some issues but I like to believe that I will never let this type of thing happen again. Recently I've been pumping myself up and have gotten into fitness, I'm still not in amazing shape but I'm *trying*. So, do you guys have any recommendations for friendly gyms that offer self defense for beginners? I'm also open to any type of martial arts, but don't know where to start looking. Any recommendations in the Manhattan area are appreciated. Preferably midtown and above! But I'm also willing to go to Chelsea or Flatiron.

  Self-defense is a specific set of skills that a gym won't necessarily offer as a class. I agree with the other suggestion of learning krav maga, but also check out independent self-defense courses that will teach you specifically how to disable and flee an attacker, no matter what your fitness level or size.
