does anyone know where to get a good uke but for a complete beginner and non musician that doesn't look heavily caked in varnish but a natural colour? it'll be a pressie if i find one!

You could go for the basic Makala MK-SN: http://www.brightonguitars.co.uk/folk-instruments/ukeleles/kala-ukeleles/kala-makala-natural-ukeleles/kala-mk-s-n and put a set of Aquila concert strings on it. That'll sound as good as anything under £100 - all for about £40.
