AVOID ACCESS REALTY AND THE HOME A WAVE FROM IT ALL 2280 New Inlet Road North Topsail NC
Don't be fooled by the pictures from a distance or the friendly Access Realty Company, both will leave you feeling like you wasted your money and time. Its a long week when your accommodations are terrible and the company behind the rental leaves you hanging on your own and spending your own vacation time and money fixing the property just to stay for the week. Below I have listed all the troubles we encountered with both the home and Access Realty.
* As soon as you enter the front door you'll be hit with the smell of mildew/mold that permeates the whole home.
* All kitchen drawers were dirty and full of mouse poop and old dried food and crumbs, including the silverware tray and silverware.
* 2 ceiling fans, both so dusty and dirty when I turned them on dust sprayed all over me, my clean bedsheets and the floor. The light fixtures attached had over 20 dead bugs in the bottom of them.
* 2 downstairs toilets had brown dried excrement under the rims and urine on the outside of the bowls and around the toilet bases. Disgusting.
* Appliances are probably the original ones from the 80's and the stove and oven were filthy covered in old food and grease. The freezer smells so bad even after I cleaned it and bought baking soda you can't use the ice in the ice maker.
* Throw rugs in kitchen, downstairs hall way, bedroom, and bathrooms were so dirty and sticky you won't want to step on them without shoes.
* The upstairs dormer window has dead spiders and bugs and its to tall to reach without a ladder so I couldn't clean them up.
* Dust ruffle on bed was so dirty its black not blue and had dust and dog hair all over it.
* Pillows, when we did find them thrown in dusty dirty closets, are all stained some of which appeared to be blood. Had to buy new ones to stay there.
* The bedspreads and comforters shown in the pictures were non existent for us, although Access Realty said they were in closets. We had to go buy a blanket to stay.
* Potholders, the only 2 there were, were covered in dried food and stains and unusable.
* All baseboards in every room were filthy and haven't been cleaned in ages, dirt, dust, pieces of hair, and stains. Very gross.
* Spills dried running down the walls in the living room.
* No screens for windows and all windows and porch door glass so dirty its impossible to see the waves and beach out them. I tried to clean to no avail.
* All the bar stools and kitchen chairs covered in flannel stapled right over the original coverings and had dried stuck on food spills and stains on them.
* Lazy Boy chair slip cover had multiple holes in it and dirty, dirty, dirty. Probably never washed ever.
Two footstools in living room both completely stained and dirty, We never used them either.
* Sofa and love seat both old and stained, we covered with a sheet we purchased. Throw pillow should just be thrown away.
* Only Curtains are in kitchen window and downstairs bedroom, they are very dirty and dusty and no blinds so be sure your only changing in the one bedroom with the curtains.
* Several sauce pans but only one tin small warped old fry pan without Teflon and its so warped it won't sit level on the stove top. We had to purchase one for the week.
* Deck Staircase to the beach is off the bedroom and is totally broken. The whole support is split and the drilled a bolt into it to try and hold it up. Two of the stairs are at a north south angel and unusable. Just a matter of time till it falls down with someone using them. Safer to go out the front door and under the house to access the beach.
* Decks are old, upstairs deck the boards are splintery and when you step on one side of a board the other side pops up. Rusty nails and splinter so wear shoes.
* Backyard is fenced for dogs but also no one has clean up after their dogs so we cleaned all the poop up but still you would want kids to play in that sand.
* I called Access Realty within the hour and they only effort made on their part was to send a cleaner to clean kitchen drawers. The cleaner wipeout the drawers with a paper towel, never washed them and then put the silverware right back into the tray that had been full of mouse poop without even washing it. We sent emails over that first night and the next morning with pictures of al the issues and never heard a word back. We were abandoned by Access Realty and forced to go to Surf City to find a Walmart, 18 miles away, to buy cleaning supplies, pillows, potholders, a fry pan, and blanket. We also cleaned the one bedroom and bathroom we used, the stove top, the sink, the ice maker and freezer but to no avail, freezer stunk the whole time. With rubber gloves, toilet bowl cleaner and hard work one bathroom was usable. We put a new sheet on the sofa and bought air fresheners. Access Realty also won't issue you any sort of credit to cover any extra expenses or time on your part making the home at least usable for the week even if you have your receipts. This home is located about a half mile from the end of the North Topsail beach and al the homes at this end of the beach are much older and in various states of disrepair. This area has been hit hard with erosion and many homes are condemned as their decks are completely gone and you can see where the water had washed into the homes breaking the doors and glass, washing off the decks, and flooding the homes. The only thing separating you and a flood are the sand bags which we didn't mind. In order to get to the beach you have to cross over a deck over the sandbags but the public access deck walkover is just two homes away so its very close. The beach is non existent during high tide as it comes up completely to the sand bags so depending on what time you'd like to go to the beach be sure to cheek the tide schedule before booking, if high tide is early afternoon you'll lose the rest of the day on the beach. What we found more disappointing that the rental house was the lack of response or corrective action from Access Realty. In my opinion any rental company that stands behind their rentals would have sent someone over, had a cleaning person or persons come immediately and rectify the issues, and the replaced the items that needed to be replaced such as pot holders, pillows, throw rugs and bathmat, and provided at least one clean usable pan and called a contractor for the stairs which are most certainly a code violation. With a complete cleaning this home will still old and in some disrepair but at the very least it would be clean. There is nothing worse than trying to rent a beachfront vacation home, driving 16 hours, incurring a hotel stay along the way, only to find that your expensive beachfront rental is a dirty dump. Then when you notify Access Realty hoping for some help to find that no one has any interest in the issues and they fail to respond you'll really feel let down and like you've wasted your hard earned money and time. After driving the whole island multiple times the nicer homes on north Topsail are as soon as you cross the bridge in Sneads Ferry and the first 6 miles of New River Inlet Road. All those homes are vacation rentals too and the one thing they all had in common was Treasure Realty. Thats my suggestion if you're looking for a safe, nice, clean beachfront property to rent. Access said the issues were because its a last minute rental property they just picked up which to me would mean they would send some one out to check that its structurally sound and clean. If thats clean to their standards as their lack of resolution expressed to us than Id recommend you try Treasure Realty as we will for our next t trip to Topsail.
Lastly our mistake was trying a " Boutique" rental agency which actually translates to small with few homes, and renting a property with no reviews. We shall see if this review makes the page, hopefully for you future renters we can save you a sub par experience where you feel duped and let down, and where you'll have the extra expenses buying the things Access Realty should have provided in the first place.
On a positive note its beachfront, when the tide is out you can use the beach, its very uncrowded, and Christina from Access Realty described the area to a tee telling us about the sand bags and minimal beach during high tide. Everything she said about North Topsail was accurate. To bad she isn't in charge there or hadn't personally viewed the property before offering it for rent.
Looking for recommendations for rental companies at the beach. We are looking late -June 4-6 bedrooms. Would like N Myrtle, Ocean Isle, Emerald Isle or OBX. No pets but would like beach front.

We love Access Realty but they are out of Topsail Island/Surf City. They have a lot of ocean front properties and they are a really nice family owned business. Check them out! www.accessthebeach.com
