  Hi neighbors, can anyone recommend a very knowledgeable and honest electrician to assess our electrical panel? Minor electrical work on our house today and we're told our electrical panel is not up to code and needs to be replaced ($$$!). It passed inspection several months ago and "all electrical was updated" prior to purchasing the house, so we're seeking a second opinion. Thank you!

  Erin McGee it sounds suspect (like a rip-off)! A panel that is overloaded will trip breakers if it is in working condition. You can feel the heat on the breakers. Also, a service change would probably not require a sub-panel if the main panel (and main breaker) was being swapped. Prices do vary depending on what is there. Then again, when I bought my house they advertised a service upgrade which was not an upgrade, just a breaker panel instead of fuses. But, a home inspection should root out major problems.   This is an interesting question given the state of licensing and inspection in Florida. I only recommend Kenneth A Perry electric to do work in St. Pete. Family owned local business. Everyone there has gone through apprenticeship yet he is still one of the cheapest. As for your panel, if your not tripping breakers then it is probably ok. This is something that needs a permit. Why did they say it was no good, and who said it? A city inspector? I have worked in the industry for 15 years, gone through apprenticeship, and was a licensed Journeyman until I left the field.
