  I applied after I arrived. There was about a 2-month backlog of appointments at the immigration office when I got here, so I was here a good while before getting residence permission. (I'm American, was joining my EU husband here, and I was not working at the time.) We didn't use a visa expediter (obviously,) but we did get interpreting help during the appointment at the immigration office from Kathleen at Red Tape Translation, which I recommend! redtapetranslation.com
