Hi, with Christmas behind us we need to look forward to 2016 and the possibility of Apple coming to Athenry. Although personally, I fully support their enterprise here, some of the objections and concerns had a firm basis and a lot of thought behind them. A lot of others, didn't. With that, I set about trying to understand better and came across a few individuals who had built a vast knowledge about the main issues. Most just want clarity with a very small number outright objecting (this is only considering those who had a firm basis of objection which i don't believe all objectors have). There are concerns outstanding, listed below, that Apple, energy suppliers and the government need to address. However for them to do so before the ABP ruling at the end of this month, would be unwise. I would like to thank all that has helped incl. those mentioned above, particularly Peter Feeney, Ciaran Cannon, and Lorraine Higgins who have, at least partially restored some of my small faith in politics ;-)
We look forward to the ABP decision and hope to stand One Community- Together.
Here are the main concerns/ objections (There were many more but this were the top ones that have basis)
1. Power Supply- although incredibly efficient, the plant will in fact use a considerable % of Ireland's power supply. pylons/ underground? new power station? etc?
2. Water Table/ supply- local flooding is a problem that runs deep with underground waterways in the area, which used to be the local supply to households and farms up to the late 90s when we got mains
3. Blasting- there is a quarry locally who have been blamed for house/ wter table damage due to blasting. Apple may need to use blasting during construction
4. Construction traffic/ noise- Apple are looking to build one unit of an 8 unit development. this will mean increased construction in the area for years to come.
5 Industrialising the area- Will the area become a new 'Parkmore' when we want to live in a rural setting? what guarantees to we have on this?
Thank you All
Paul
