Hoping to take a trip with the horses starting from south central PA up to Winconsin . Not sure best route. We nomally drive (without horses) from PA, thru MD. Then into Virginia, then West Virginia, then Kentucky, south Indiana. Then southern Illinois... then up towards Wisconsin (where some family live).
What would you all recommend for must stop places to camp and ride? One I get the truck and trailer as far as Illinois, getting the family to meet up with me there would be easy. Buy I have no ideas where to camp with the horses. I was to interception horse camping to some younger family members later this summer . I will have brought sweet beginner horses for the family to tide and enjoy.
Suggestions please

Our favorite place in 20 states to ride-Shawnee Nat'l Forest. We have camped at Double M, Bay Creek, 34 Ranch, Bear Branch, High Knob. We prefer Double M. There are miles of well-marked and maintained trails out of camp and Heath has a trailer you can use to haul to other trail heads-Bay Creek, Lust Creek, One Horse Gap. Bay Creek is our second choice. We looked ar Hayes Canyon but it is terribly crowded. We will never go back to High Knob as she limited water usage and was rude. www.doublemcampground.com

A bunch of us are going camping next week, the 5th-11th somewhere in the Shawnee National Forest, Illinois. We were planning to stay at the Highway 34 Ranch but we just recently learned that it is currently closed because they are reselling. Looking for a place nearby to camp... we have been to high knob but for this specific trip we are wanting something with more shady areas, and a good place for kids to ride bikes and play... We are also wanting to visit the Garden of the god's a day or two. We know it's last minute and many places may be full, but we need some suggestions please!! We loved highway 34! Would like to camp somewhere similar... Any ideas???
Angi E. replied:
Try the Double M Campground. It's our favorite and not that far from your original destination. Heath and Amy Mann have some shaded areas, a play area for the kids, not too far from Ponds Hollow for swimming, about 20 miles from Harrisburg for shopping and days of riding. http://www.doublemcampground.com/
