About us
Owls hunt at night and are seldom observed by humans. Because of this nocturnal (nighttime) existence, they are little known and often misunderstood, even though some owls live their entire lives in close proximity to man.
Owls share our natural habitat and play an important role in the ecological system, keeping the rodent population under control.
Owls have a very high mortality rate due to the threats they face – Owls get secondary poisoning from poisoned rats, they are run over by cars, used for ‘Muti’ or simply killed out of fear and unwarranted suspicion. These are all causes for a vulnerable owl population.
We hope, through increased understanding of the owl's true character, the fears and misgivings that often surround peoples' perceptions of owls will be replaced by tolerance and respect for these unique birds.
Owl Rescue Centre needs your help!
The Owl Rescue Centre rehabilitate and release 200 – 250 Spotted Eagle Owls, 100 – 150 Barn Owls and 80 -100 other owl species each year. Apart from rescuing and rehabilitating owls, we spend a large sum of our time educating individuals on owls and the harm caused by pesticides.
All the owls that come to the Owl Rescue Centre are released once they are ready and able to hunt and survive in the wild.
Owls are released through hacking techniques, following a 'soft release' approach with the use of Hacking Aviaries. We follow a philosophy of minimal human interference to nature’s natural means. We nurture owls when they need us, but we allow them to stay wild and return to their natural habitat when they no longer require our assistance.
Consider this before using poison:
There is no pesticide available on the market that is safe for owls and other birds of prey.
The chemicals used to control rodents are being found in the livers of owls and are causing the deaths of an alarming quantity of birds of prey.
The chemicals cause metabolic disruption and damage to tiny blood vessels, resulting in internal... show more bleeding and ultimately death.
The Owl-friendly Rat Trap is designed primarily to catch rats without killing them or using harmful chemicals.
Food bait (not poisoned) is placed inside the cage part of the Rat Trap to lure the rodents to the trap. The rat or mouse enters the Rat Trap through a trap door to get to the bait. The rodent is caught alive and without injury; it is trapped with a supply of water and food.
When you see a rodent in your trap, you can contact the Owl Rescue Centre to collect the rats to use as food for the owls in the rehabilitation centre.
