My babe was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia and strapped into a Pavlik Harness at about 5 months old, after our Plunket nurse noticed that her bum looked a bit wonky.
We're now 3 months into the 8 month (we hope not any longer!) treatment plan and are familiar with most of the shortcuts through the halls of Auckland Starship Children’s Hospital. If you're keen to read a long-winded account of our journey so far check out my blog -

I feel like I've stumbled my way through so many different emotions since this unexpected chapter of motherhood began... one seemingly insignificant issue was the disappointment and frustration at the lack of fun clothing available for hip babes. Speaking on behalf of most parents out there going through this (if I may), a sad sigh often occurs when opening the drawer or wardrobe and realising that most of those baby clothes you bought and were gifted will no longer work.
Fortunately, my mum is a patternmaker and seamstress extraordinaire… She came to our rescue and created some cool outfits for my girl. Having one less difference between us and the healthy hipsters out there has been strangely nice. It’s fun being able to dress her up for outings again.
I realised that we have an opportunity to help out others in similar situations – turning this clothing issue into a positive and hopefully bringing some sunshine to their wardrobes too.
And so Moonu was born.
Our initial summer styles are based around the Pavlik Harness (one of the many, odd looking contraptions used for treatment), as we conveniently have a fit model to use for sample patterns! Fun and functional is what we’re going for. All our clothing is 100% cotton or 100% organic cotton. Our future goal is to use solely organic cotton for summer clothes, organic cotton knit and merino wool for the cooler months, sustainable materials where possible and also create our own range of prints. Dream big, we say!
We will have a winter / knit... show more
range coming soon and some outfits for babes that aren't hip-challenged too, so stay tuned.
Please feel free to get in touch with feedback, queries or requests for different styles, we would love to hear from you.
Lastly, a little bit of background info, if you're interested...
My mum & I make up team Moonu. I'm Jen, mums name is Martha and Eva is my little hipster.
Mum has been in the fashion industry for many years, primarily working as a patternmaker. She is also an amazing dressmaker. I remember scooting around her sewing room floor collecting thread in my toy truck when I was a little one and falling asleep to the sound of the Singer sewing machine whirring away.
Together we have worked on many collaborations over the years, mainly for my wardrobe… from fluoro pink lycra pants (I was born in the 80s; thank goodness I’ve got that excuse), to ball gowns and a wedding dress. You could say this mother daughter project has been a long time coming!
Mums experience and knowledge is huge and her ability to whip up an outfit from scratch is pretty cool, not to mention extremely handy.
And me, I'm a landscape designer by trade, currently on a break while I enjoy and adjust to being a mum.

Hi Monika, my mum & I make clothing for babes in Pavlik Harnesses. If your daughter is in one of these, we may be able to help... our page is www.facebook.com/moonubaby We're based in NZ but ship internationally. I've found Babu sleeping bags have been great for our girl. They seem to be very generous in width. Not sure if they're sold in Australia but their website is www.babu.co.nz. I've also heard great recommendations for the Halo sleep sacks
