About us
The Tube Wean NZ Campaign has been established by a group of concerned and affected mums who have had or still have a tube fed child.
We are a pro-active group based in Wellington that have decided our children have not, and do not receive adequate support and advice regarding weaning our children off their tubes.
We are releasing a petition on August 30th to lobby the government early next year in February.
And we need your help to raise awareness and get as many signatures and support as we can for these children affected.
• The impact financially due long‐term tube feeding on a family and the New Zealand Health System, is estimated at tens of thousands each child annually.
• The emotional and psychological long term effects on the tube fed child and their family are also huge.
• Tube feeding is supposed to be a short term solution for children that are uncapable of feeding orally due to illness or prematurity.
• But sadly there is no comprehensive exit strategy to remove a tube once its purpose has been served.
• There is a huge lack of recognition by relevant professionals that tube dependency is becoming a major problem in New Zealand.
• We want to initiate support in our Health System to start researching and implementing an intensive rapid weaning program, based on the Graz Model of Tube Weaning from Austria.
• Strict protocol needs to be put in place as soon as you leave the hospital, so you know what lies ahead, regarding treatment, support and goals.
• And also establish a network for parents to support each other.
