The question was asked during this week on a different thread, "What shops are needed in Fishponds high street section". In Greater Fishponds we have everything with IKEA and Next and ASDA Living at Eastgate. We have Lodge Causeway shops and shops all along Staple Hill, some in Downend and Bromley Heath.
Do we really need another butchers in Fishponds.. it may look good but it will probably collapse within months of opening.
We already have Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Cooperative Food, International Food Store, Sainsburys and International Butchers. The same stores all sell fresh fruit & veg. It may tick some boxes to say we have an individual shop for this and for that but are they really needed and it's a big ask for someone to take a risk in investing a small fortune for shops which already provide in the area. The only shops coming out of the thread which we really do not have and is needed; agreed by everyone it seems is a clothes store like M & Co or similar which sell clothes for all the family and secondly a toy store.. but will a toy shop really work?
A new market on the Straits Parade and possibly overflowing in to Fishponds Park will be a great addition to the area, that's a way of bringing those unique requests to reality without traders having commit to risks and instead will target people in a different way. New cafés in Fishponds have made our area feel more cosmopolitan and a market is arguably what's needed now to see everything come together..
Markets haven't worked here before, but there's definitely a sense of change in Fishponds now and a supported market offering quality products opposed to fruit & veg which is on the turn (which is what we had last time) will be great. For various reasons other markets have stopped. Will they be used now? But we also need commitment from the traders.. last time, the Fishmonger often didn't turn up, when he did, he had little stock compared to another time.. people need reliable traders as much as traders need customers. Fishponds needs a market for the long term and not a market which tests the waters for several weeks every two years..
