I saw that there are a couple of companies making them, so does anyone have a reason to go with one company over another? Has anyone had any luck getting insurance to pay for them?   First, know that while they do help they can be rather painful at times. Try carrying a grocery bag with them on. It's not a great feeling when the metal grinds into your skin. I say this in case you have to pay for them out of pocket. Don't buy too many, try a couple first to be sure you can tolerate them. Second, ONLY go through the original, Silver Ring Splint Co. You cannot buy them, only a doc/PT order can get them, but make sure they come from the original company. http://www.silverringsplint.com/

  With the Silver Ring Splint Company, you can make exchanges if they do not fit (within a certain time frame) but no refunds. We were lucky that my daughter's fit on the first try, so did not need to exchange any.

  I have had mine all 10 for a little over 2 months. It has taken some getting use to them. Like others carry groceries is not comfortable. When I place my purse over my shoulder the thumb tends to get caught. It took me 2 hand therapists and 3 different measurements to get the thumbs just right. I love silver ring splint company. My husband's insurance fully paid for mine. The SRS company site even has the CPT codes on their site so you can call your insurance to check if they are covered. If they had not been covered I would have paid around $1300.

Of course I can't wear shoes on my hands and taping weak joints all the time is an annoyance (I'm also allergic to medical adhesives). Can you recommend some exercises or treatments to help make my hands/fingers stronger? Thank you!

  Hi Laura, I don't know about finger exercises other than squeezing balls and such. A hand specialist or occupational therapist could help you. For folks having disclocations, subluxations, and/or hyper-extention, many EDSers find wearing ring splints a fantastic option.
