A brief History
Some years ago, Gabe Popkin (farmer, square dance caller, old time musician) and Neil Zimmerman (volunteer farmer, dancer) met in the fields at Potomac Vegetable Farm in Loudoun County, VA.
Amongst Gabe's talents was the great ability to gather a group of people for a fun event. Together with Rob Moutoux (proprietor of Moutoux Orchards), he organized the first couple of Summer barn dances in Rob's barn; they included a caller's collective, old timey musician friends of Gabe, a potluck, walking tours of the farms, swimming in the pond, camping out on the farm, and breakfast/peach preserving the next day. Those occurred in the Summers of 2008 and 2009 [AFAIK - Gabe?].
After that, as Gabe moved out of town and Neil was loath to see those events disappear, Neil took over organizing them. In addition, since some people wanted more than one per year, they came up with the idea of "Faux Barn Dances" in the climate-controlled Stone House at Meadowbrook in the Winter, and also sometimes used the FBD's as a way to raise awareness and money for local organizations.
