  So I have a question for you all. Scout, my mini Aussie who just turned 7 months, has recently developed some behavior issues. He is lunging at other dogs and people on the leash, barking and growling at people, and is getting into arguments at the dog park more lately. So after doing some research, I found out that this is typical of the breed in their "adolescent" years. I was wondering if anyone else had issues like this and how they resolved it. Or any recommendations for good dog trainers in the area that won't cost me an arm and a leg? Thanks!

  Our BC was reactive when we first started working with him. I watched a bunch of Youtube videos on reactive dogs. I tried several things but what I think worked best was BAT. I did not follow it 100% but it was very helpful. I did end up getting her book on amazon. http://grishastewart.com/bat-overview/

  Unfortunately I was not able to locate a local trainer with behavioral focus. I am going the self-edu route and find the BAT resources to be the most helpful so far. Not to be discouraging, but there is no quick fix and the longer the pup practices this behavior the more engrained it will become. You will want to start working to resolve this as quickly as possible. Obedience training will help, especially if you find a trainer that has experience with herding breeds, but you will need more help than just a puppy class. Please check out the Website referenced above. Grisha Stewart does video consults, has online resources and this BAT 2.0 book was inexpensive and worth it's weight in gold for a reactive dog. I am also going to do her online Barking Mad class but need to get through the BAT book first. I am definitely not dog trainer material, but I am working through it and seeing some progress. Don't give up, it can be better!
