My love for photography started at childhood. I would “steal” my mom’s camera, load it with film and take pictures of everything; my room, the dog, the cat, our yard, my brothers…basically anything I could find! I would beg her to buy me disposable cameras to take on vacation so I would have those memories to put in an album. My love for photography started at a young age but became a true interest when I was in high school. I ended up taking 5 semesters of photography; taking all our sport team pictures and events, spending all my time in the dark room or editing photos, and my senior year was the President of VICA (Vocational Industries of America).
In 2013 I “officially” started Katie Roinas Photography. My clientele consisted of my family, my family, a few friends…and my family! Since that first year my clientele has grown substantially, and includes many more families other than my own. Starting out though, it was a great way to figure out who I was (and am) as a photographer. Having young children, and taking many pictures of them, I knew that was something I could do…something that I wanted to do! I like to consider myself a Lifestyle Photographer. I shoot weddings and events, but most of my business is Family Sessions. Which I Love!
I recently had a conversation with a client:
HER: OH KATIE, THESE ARE SO SWEET!! I DO LOVE THEM!! SO MUCH MORE THAN WHAT I WAS EXPECTING WITH OUR BUSY SESSION AND CRAZY BOYS! ME:YOU GUYS HAVE SUCH A SWEET FAMILY. AND THE ACTION/CANDID ARE WHAT REAL MEMORIES ARE! HER: EXACTLY! I LOVE THAT YOU GET THAT!!
Now, I am never against a perfect Family picture. I always strive for that. Eyes open…everyone looking the same direction…Big beautiful smiles. But I think there is a growing need and desire for parents (or grandparents, etc.) to be able to look back upon their photographs and be able see and feel the love, emotion, and laughter of that day. Maybe a memory from when their child was that age will suddenly be... show more
remembered. How they lost all those teeth that one year…or decided to smile SO big that all you can see are closed eyes and a set of teeth. Or when they got that terrible hair cut…maybe even did it themselves.
I find myself more and more getting inspiration from everyday things the little moments…kids throwing rocks into the water (I once wore rain boots specially cause I had a lakeside session…I ended up wading in as far as I could to get some images of the kids on the shore), playing football with Dad, tickling Mom, giving cheek kisses and huge squeeze hugs! The candid moments are what I live for. No matter small (or big for that matter), those moments in life are beautiful.
