jazzyfm asked:Schools recommendations Hi! We are looking into relocating to South Carolina, specifically the Summerville, Goose Creek or Moncks Corner areas. What schools do you recommend? It is challenging because realtors can’t really give recommendations. We are looking at a community that falls under Cane Bay Elementary, another that falls under Whitesville Elementary... there are others but we have no idea about schools in the area. Help!!! We’ve also considered maybe homeschooling or even better doing some sort of options program, where he could go to school twice a week and homeschool 3 days. I know it is an option in other states, but are you familiar with it in SC? If so can you please assist with how I should go about obtaining information about it? Thank you!!
madbugger22 replied:We moved back to SC in 2006. Had the ability to live pretty much anywhere in the state we wanted due to the flexibility of my job. We chose Summerville specifically for Dorchester District 2. Both my kids went through from kindergarten and 2 nd grade at Beech Hill (great school!) through graduation at Ashley Ridge HS. Middle schools in the district aren’t the best, but both of mine were lucky enough to go to Rollings Middle School of the Arts, a public but by audition school, and that was the best experience for them. Greatschools.Org gives you ratings on all schools that you should definitely check out.

Consider that a public school will most often require you to reside in a certain location while a private school doesn't. Not sure why, maybe because it's a hard age, but even when we lived down the hill in Whittier we would have run into the same problem so I don't think it's only the high dessert. Good Luck!

There are good teachers and there are those who meet minimum standards...it is all luck of the draw. I urge you to take a proactive stance with your children's education. Seek out items that will help you gauge where they are at and making sure they are where they need to be. I recommend the Summer Bridge series as well as the "What my ___ grader needs to know" books. The entire state is one school district; which makes moving to a "better" district not much of an option, unless you can afford private school. There are some schools that score better than others on standardized tests, but resources are quite different than the "norm" I've known. My best advice to you is to make sure that YOU provide them with opportunities that they will not get in school here. Allow them time to do age appropriate activities on the computer, supplement "extra-curricular" subjects like music and physical education. They'll do enough to check a box for Hawaii DOE standards, but it will not be what you've probably come to expect from a school.

But nice homes. They also have mega community complex that just opened with a huge pool, lacrosse fields , zip lines etc. Check out greatschools.org and look up douglas county high school, castle view high school, castle rock middle school and Mesa middle school. It's a great resource. There are lots of community sports programs outside of the schools as well.

Also the property taxes, they can be extremely high even if you think you are getting a great deal on a house. We have owned in other states, and the property taxes here are more than twice what we paid before, so it makes a huge difference in your housing budget. There are definitely neighborhoods with high crime here. You should also research if the home you want is in the actual city limits verses Travis County because it changes a lot for you. Even though you would have a Pville address, if you are Travis County, you will pay way more for stuff like swim lessons, local parks and recreation, local colleges, it really comes up a lot so just keep an eye out for that. There are other things that come up when you get lumped into a much larger county with a huge population verses being in the city limits with a much smaller population... The neighborhood that you choose can really make or break your experience here. I would recommend one with new builds going on. Good luck!

TIA.Lauren D. replied:Best schools are going to be in Clarksville, the Sango area/exit 8 or 11. Rossview schools. That's about 20-30 minutes or so from post. Pleasant view is going to be further than that. Good areas closer to post will be the exit 1 & 4 area. Then it gets nicer as you go to exit 8 & 11(yes it's strange how the areas are described by interstate exits lol, confused the heck out of us when we moved here in 2007) Exit 1 is closest to post, exit 11 is closer to nashville. And Nashville is only about 45 minutes to an hour from Clarksville and there's so much to do there. You'll really just want to stay away from the New Providence area in Clarkville. I personally think the best gauge is to look up schools on greatschools.org and that'll pretty much dictate where good vs. bad areas will be. Hope that helps!

We like country living and doing outdoor things so this is where we chose to live. There is a huge State Park right down the road and Walmart in JC is only a 12 min drive. Estes gate is super close so it takes very little time to get to "the hill" where most soldiers work. Manhattan is 40 min one way and Salina 50 min the other way. We visit Salina often and IMO it is better than Manhattan. Abilene & Chapman are also very nice small military areas. If you are more into shopping and city life then look into Manhattan. Also greatschools.org will give you school ratings in the area. I picked my girls' school before I picked our house.

Its relly lovely here and its safer than others. Depending on where u live here, there can be break ins into cars and homes but this area is really nice. My son is 5.5 and he is in K - he goes to an awesome school that we were really lucky to get into. Its works pretty much like SA here with regards to public schools - the area u live in is zoned to a particular school. If there are no placements in the school, they refer you to another school and sometimes you may really end up in the wrong school. Best to research the school first and check if there is place, then look for the accomadation. A really good web site to use is www.greatschools.org. It helped me alot when looking for schools. Also, if you moving to Houston try HISD.com. The school you should try to get your kids into should be an exemplary school. These web sites will help :) -Best of luck with the move :)

I am using www.greatschools.org which has a rating system 1-10. I've looked in Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake. There's a lot of 1's and 3's, which are pretty bad. I did find a few schools that are north and northeast of the main city of Suffolk that are 7's and 8's: Driver Elem., Oakland Elem, and Northern Shores Elem. are all part of the Suffolk school district, and Edwin W. Chittum Elem. is part of the Chesapeake district but is on the far west side of Chesapeake. We are looking to just rent and I'm leaning towards the far north area around Northern Shores. The Killeen District is a huge district that includes Killeen, Ft. Hood, Harker Heights and Nolanville. Out of those towns I would choose Harker Heights. HH also has a huge shopping/restaurant area, too. Copperas Cove is another great town with a good school district out west of Killeen. Or you could look east of Killeen in Belton near I35. Belton has great schools, good housing prices and easy access to shopping and restaurants. It's really developed its downtown area in the last few years. It also has a back road into post that helps you avoid the 190 traffic trying to get on post. Also check out www.greatschools.org to see how schools rate in these different areas.Olivia K. replied:I forgot that Zillow and Realtor actually post the GreatSchools ratings for each school within a house's zone. If you decide to look for a place in Killeen, I would suggest start looking south of 190. I lived on the north side near Killeen High, Rancier Middle and Brookhaven Elem. It's a rough side of town.
