  Don't get fooled by the cowboy companies, quite often their remedies don't solve the problem but cover it up for a few years. Check out these guys, http://www.heritage-consulting.org/damp-surveys.   I've got a bay window which is very damp at the bottom. I have had a quote with the following work detailed. New DPC injected internally and externally. Internal plaster removed back to brickwork. Then tanked before boarding or bonding, finish off with plaster, then skirting supplied and fitted to match. Is that a bit overkill or sound about right the quote of £770. Includes a skip and road permit, the area is about 4 sq metres Then to top it all of he cant now do the work as he's landed as 6 month contract. Does anyone know anyone in the Hull, Humberside area, that could do the work?

  No expert but these guys say rising damp is a myth and DPC is a national scandal! A lot of damp problems are caused by using the wrong materials i.e non lime based plaster or plastic based paint instead of clay based, that blocks up the porus walls and doesn't allow it to breathe. Also can anyone recommend someone good for dealing with damp in a standard old type, terrace property in Belfast, Northern Ireland? Just front and back bay windows really, in a rental property but I wish to keep it long term and would rather do it right. Advice appreciated - normally don't opt for properties with damp but unfortunately that negates a lot of the ones in Belfast, so I'm exploring how big (small) a problem it really is. Thanks.

Thanks for the local suggestion Mary Selwood. With so much conflicting information on it all and what would appear to be an industry built upon misrepresentation, it's difficult to know who best to use. Peter Ward certainly seems to know what he's talking about - shame he's not local.
