Kearney Area Doula Support
About Us
Supporting and nurturing families, Beginning* Birth*Beyond
We are a support group whose focus is the over-all well-being of families. Some of us are Certified Doulas, while others are simply passionate about community outreach and assistance. Our hope is to inform the area about the benefits of Doula support, bring new Doulas into training, and pair Doulas with families based on their own personal needs.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple: “We strive to be nurturers, educators, confidants, supporters; assisting through active listening, positive attitude, and unconditional love during the antepartum/birth/postpartum transitions, to ensure each family feels as enabled and secure as possible.”
“Throughout the experience of new parenthood, the Doula provides a safe place for the family emotionally. She allows the family to be comfortable with whatever successes they have met, and does not push them forward. Her acceptance of the family’s parenting style, strength, and self-expressed shortcomings is unconditional.”
(“Nurturing the Family” by J. Kelleher)
The role of a Doula
The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.
A Birth Doula:
Recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life
Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor
Assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth
Stays with the woman throughout the labor
Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decision
Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her... show more
clinical care providers
Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of the birth experience
Allows the woman's partner to participate at his/her comfort level
Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

A Postpartum Doula:
Offers education, companionship and nonjudgmental support during the postpartum fourth trimester
Assists with newborn care, family adjustment, meal preparation and light household tidying
Offers evidence-based information on infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, infant soothing and coping skills for new parents and makes appropriate referrals when necessary
Research evidence shows that the quality services of a postpartum doula can ease the transition that comes with the addition of a baby to a family, improve parental satisfaction and reduce the risk of mood disorders.

“It’s the support that is really most important….and it is a very badly neglected subject….Society has not really seen fit to provide support for women as a matter of policy….we should say we value newborn children, we value new mothers, we are going to give them help, instead of forcing everything on the mother alone.” Dorothy C Wertz (from “Mothering the New Mother” by S. Placksin)
“To put it simply, we must begin to tell the truth, in groups, to one another.” Carolyn G Heilbrun (from “Writing a Woman’s Life”)
