  Oh it's been a while so i'm not sure I know if it's just the 'housing' (like the power and data ports) of the drive that's broken then it shouldn't be so expensive. There is lots of places in NY that do data recovery, you should be able to get it done for cheap-ish, Tekserve is just the one i've used before.
