DO WE KNOW ANYONE IN CHICAGO LOOKING FOR A WESTIE???

There are plenty of legitimate dog rescue sites, many breed specific, many not. If someone is legitimately looking for a home for a dog, why wouldn't they contact one of them? Such as PAWS: http://www.pawschicago.org/
Kids want a dog for Christmas. Any recommendations on a good place, or places to avoid, in Chicagoland would be appreciated.

Hi Paul, avoid pet stores that sell puppies (unless the pet store is having an adoption event). Generally puppies found in pet stores are from puppy mills. There are many great places to look to adopting dogs in Chicago. As Robert mentioned, Red Door is good. Also PAWS Chicago http://www.pawschicago.org/. I have a friend that fosters for them. Generally these places have more mixes than purebred dogs (though some purebreds are available). If you are looking for a purebred, there are many breed clubs that have rescue programs for their specific breed. One thing to note, some organizations do not adopt out around the holidays because they don't want the pups to be treated as "just another Christmas gift." Also, the holidays seem to be hectic times with travel, family in and out, Christmas decorations, etc... which is not always good when adding a new pup to the family. They need a routine, so some places may request after the holidays that the pet be adopted.
Help! Please! Does anyone know of an eye doctor for cats. A specialist. My Gillian need eye surgery but it is super expensive and I need to know if there is any kind of like charity care for animals?
