I got it for my puppy a couple years ago, and he broke his leg a month later and needed surgery. The policy paid 90% of all of the bills (which totaled almost $4 k!!)... you can process the claims online and they direct deposited the money to my account within a couple of days. Every dog has a different premium based on breed and age, you can go online for a quote... I pay $38/month for my miniature Australian Shepherd. Well worth the money.Julie G. replied:Trupanion. When he does get up he walks really precautious, and yelps if you touch his sides by his hind legs. Hes also shaking, even while being under a blanket. I have him laying down covered up and so far have only gotten him to drink water. I havent changed his food in a while. Not recent changes at all. Does anyone know what might be wrong with him or Would anyone know of a vet i cant take him to that will work with me, as in payments. They have different plans. And I believe one of them had a plan that covers some routine stuff. It's similar to people insurance I think though, the older they are sometimes the price is higher.Jillianne J. replied:Trupanion seems like a good company, check them out online they have policies for emergencies that you can adjust the deductible for. With any insurance company they will not cover any ore existing medical conditions. If your pet had a bladder infection as a puppy and then got bladder stones at 5 years of age and you did not have coverage from the beginning it would be considered per existing. Also some insurance companies "top out" so will only cover up to a certain dollar amount. Just weigh the option on maybe putting your $1000 a year into an account of some sort, sometimes it works out better. If the breed is nonproblematic..ie allergies,accident prone then that may be a better option. That being said its pretty darn hard not to touch that money for other emergencies..LOL

I highly recommend pet insurance to everyone especially with the rise in veterinary costs even in the last ten years. It will give you the satisfaction knowing your pet is covered and also your veterinarian who won't lose a client, or their patient even, because of the cost of veterinary bills. Most of them will give you a free quote too so you know what you're looking at as far as pricing.

Just watch how much coverage they are giving u, the cheaper levels looked very limited to me. Brew's total bill for bladder stone surgery last spring was about $3000, then it was complicated with pancreatitis & I was very happy to have 90% coverage

Pet secure has a lot of per incident limits, lifetime limits and were double the cost of Trupanion. Pet Secure also does not cover congenital illness, Trupanion does, which is important to me because of what we have been through with Nookie. Trupanion now offers a holistic rider as well. We pay an extra $12 a month for it, but we can see Steve and all the supplements are covered
Dana H. replied:I had Vetinsurance (now Trupanion) years ago for one of my Minpins (Squiggy), and he ended up passing away from Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis at seven months old. I recouped almost all of the expenses for his vet care without a hitch. I had a "feeling" about this dog though that he may have issues because of his extra small size, and that's why I insured him. Now though, I wouldn't only because I could not "pick" one to insure, and the premiums are pretty high to get good coverage. I might do it with one dog or two, but not with five...I'd rather have a savings plan, or credit for unforeseen vet expenses now.

Kari G. replied:Check out this article from 2010 Consumer Reports - it compared some of the plans. We have Trupanion for Inga - they are based in Seattle, but are nationwide. We've had a good experience with them. They don't cover preventative care like regular exams or vaccines, but they also don't have lifetime limits on the expensive treatments. Jordana H. replied:TruPanion. I pay less than $20 per month and I can change my coverage anytime I want. If my dog develops hip displasia, or diabetes I can increase my coverage. As of right now any emergency procedure is covered, car accident, if he eats something really bad, etc. They will even go as far to cover any expenses lost if I had a vacation planned during the emergency. Also, as of right now all medications are covered, the only thing I pay out of pocket is the vet fee. Both vets in town I have been to bill direct to them as well so I don't have to make a claim and wait for my money. It's incredible and I wouldn't change it for the world. Knowing that my dog is covered is priceless!
