I'm still deciding buy/build - meaning purchasing turnkey already built, or buying van and having it professionally up fit (think Sports Mobile type up-fit). I've called and spoke with my insurance agent and for custom vans, they didn't really have anything other than just insuring as a normal van with contents, which gets stupid expensive as opposed to normal RV insurance. So, I'm trying to find experience of others that have gone the route of professional after market builds and how insurance was handled. Is there a process to reclassify the vehicle for both DMV and insurance purposes? Pros/Cons? TIA for any help.

Not all do. It also is going to depend on what you are insuring, how much, etc. I suggest you give Miller Insurance Agency a call. They got me better pricing than what I was getting when I called insurance companies direct. If you are living in it full time, you will definitely need full timers insurance and not just a regular rv insurance.
