About us
Canberra Asian Mums (CAMs) welcomes all mums (Asian or not) but focuses on Asian mums born in Australia, as well as those born overseas, Asian expats and mixed-race families. Posts in non-English languages are welcome!
CAMs was set up to connect expecting, new and experienced Asian mums in a space which is non-judgmental and focused on helping our children reach their full potential.
CAMs is also intended to be a forum where products, services and ideas can be discussed, with a focus on structured educational activities for children of *all* ages.
It goes without saying that whilst the ACT has arguably the best schools in Australia, they often lag behind schools in SE and NE Asia, especially when it comes to teaching maths and english grammar. In addition, as has been well documented, the total number of hours Australian children spend in school each year is significantly lower than many Asian countries.
Unlike other similar forums for mothers in the ACT, CAMs supports discussing structured learning activities, enrichment classes and tutoring for children of *ALL* ages, including pre-kindergarten aged children. If you are a tutor, run an enrichment activity or offer structured learning activities for under-5s (and especially under 3s) please feel free to contact us regarding promoting your services (for free).
It goes without saying that often it appears that the concept of taking a child's education 'seriously' in Australia involves little more than ensuring they go to a school located conveniently close to home and asking them about homework from time to time. CAMs understands that many Asian parents have approaches to education ranging from very similar to the typical Australian approach through to the so-called 'tiger mum' approach.
We aim to cater for all approaches, and as a result, we support openly discussing and comparing schools based on publicly available objective and quantitative data such as NAPLAN scores, ATAR scores and percentages of students... show more
completing school, advancing to university etc.
We encourage all forms of motherhood ranging from stay at home mums (SAHMs), those that work part-time, full-time, use a nanny or au pair, childcare, family day care, public school, private school and yes, even boarding school. We are also very supportive of extracurricular language schools to help Asian children obtain or retain proficiency in their mother tongues, as well as promoting bi-lingual education generally. We detest the 'mummy wars' seen elsewhere online.
We also support diverse forms of parenting and understand that different cultures express love and the care for the safety and security of their children in different ways. Put simply, we understand that a many Asian mums believe in a little tough-love from time to time and have an eye to long-term goals, but are open to other views.
Some final points:
1. We don't allow disrespectful communications between members of the community.
2. We respect differences in race, religion, and the lifestyle of other mums and Canberrans, whilst valuing traditional family and Asian values.
3. We do not tolerate insulting individuals with biased, prejudiced, discriminatory or defamatory comments.
4. We will not allow posts seeking medical advice. If you have a condition, suspect you have a condition or want to know what treatments are available, see a doctor or seek a second opinion if you already have. That said, we are happy for CAMs to facilitate discussions *about* doctors, hospitals etc
5. As per point 4 above, the same applies to seeking legal advice. The amount of incorrect legal advice given on various forums is truly staggering (the classic being 'if you apply for child support he is automatically entitled to see the kids'). If you have a legal question, speak to a lawyer or appropriate support service if you can't afford one. show more
