Hi all. My lovely princess had the vet out yesterday after my farrier expressed concern for the state of her right front hoof, which had a large hole. X-rays determined that the hole was due to an abcess which she had blown out a little bit ago and which we had seen come out the bottom, but apparently burst all the way up in her coronet band, and essentially eliminated the white line in part of her hoof. Initially they were worried her hoof wall wouldn't grow back in a healthy fashion, but they did find that she is growing new healthy hoof at the very top. All in all, worse news than I was hoping for, but better than it could have been. That being said, they had to remove all of the dead hoof wall, and prognosis is six to eight months of daily hoof wrapping changes, with minimal turnout and light riding, as well as a hospital plate filled with Magic Cushion which will need to be changed weekly. Oh- and a hoof supplement. The worst part is that literally all of this is just because she happened to get an abcess and blow it in the worst possible way. Anyone have any experience with an injury- if it is even really technically an injury- like this? Anyone make it through a really ridiculously long and depressing rehab and have any tips to share? I would greatly appreciate any positive feedback. Of course we will be keeping her and she will have the best care, I'm just a little bummed out right now.
