Short version – Chip Breshers did not deliver on any of his promises. I would not recommend him to anyone as he left my house in a state of disarray for a couple of months and the job never got finished.
Long version – When I first hired Chip to restore my bathroom, 1st floor flooring, and garage drywall he told me it could be done in 2-3 days. Since my wife was 37 weeks, pregnant we wanted the bathroom done quickly before the baby got here, but could be flexible on the rest. We agreed that I would pay half up front and the remainder when the work was completed. I paid the first half and off we went. I picked the tile and vanity. We went together to pick out the flooring and I asked how it was going to be attached. He stated that they would have to glue it and described in detail the type of glue he would use. When we started construction, he “sent his best guys” and focused on the bathroom and garage. They installed the bathroom flooring first. After they installed it, I realized that it was nowhere near even. A couple of the tiles stuck up 1/4" above the one next to it. The tiles were also not evenly spaced. He agreed that it needed to be redone, so they pulled up 6 tiles, cleaned the area, and re-laid them. The 2nd time was as bad or worse than the first. In the meantime, they installed the vanity including the sink and faucet before having paint as they were waiting on Chip to bring the paint. Rather than use solid PVC he went the easy way and used flexible accordion pipe, which I later insisted that he replace. In the process of installing the countertop, they managed to scratch and dent a couple of spots. Additionally, they left the manufacturer sticker on the vanity countertop and installed the faucet over it. Well, they had tried to remove it and did not get it all then just left it that way. When I pointed out the scratches and dents, he at first agreed to replace the countertop. He later said he would resurface this one. Neither ever happened. They then painted the bathroom. However, they failed to cover the vanity and proceeded to get paint splatter all over the countertop and faucet then never cleaned it up. Now the spots are difficult to remove. They were also very sloppy with the painting and either missed spots or painted the wall color on the trim. The painter also did not remove the light switch plate before painting – he had to remove a light switch extender but then left the switch plate after having to remove two screws. They tried to clean it but the light switch plate still does not look right. He did later send a different guy to repaint. They finally installed the toilet, which rocked afterwards so badly we were afraid to use it. They pulled it up and remounted it, but despite Chip saying that he did not recommend caulking around the bottom edge, the subcontractor caulked anyway. The bathroom construction (though it has not been completed to our satisfaction) took about 1.5 months – so my wife was walking up and down the stairs every time she or our three year old needed to go for a month after having a baby. The garage area is the only area that was done properly on the first attempt (though it did not get finished for a couple of months). Finally we moved on to the flooring. We had originally asked him to hold off on the flooring and focus on the bathroom until after the beginning of the year since we really wanted to have a bathroom on our main floor by the time the baby arrived. He assured us he would have our entire house done before Thanksgiving (this was on Nov 11 or so). The originally scheduled date to begin flooring was four days after our baby’s expected due date, on which date we called and told them not to come because we had our baby. We did, however, ask Chip to come finish our bathroom and he came and did very little that day. He sent a subcontractor and one unskilled assistant (sometimes other people would also come to help) out to install the flooring who proceeded to try to install it as a floating floor, when it was not click lock flooring. He kept telling me that he just needed to tighten it up at the edges and it would be fine. Well, despite his efforts to tighten it, there were loose pieces everywhere. He proceeded to surface nail the loose pieces and putty/stain over the nail. You could see every nail hole. Additionally, they had to cut the trim in our doorways near the floor to make them high enough for the new flooring which was thicker and they cut it way too short and it is very “rough” looking. We pointed it out and Chip had his people put stain over the rough edge. It looks awful. Through talking to the subcontractor, we found out that his area of expertise was painting, not flooring. After a couple of weeks of humoring Chip and his “flooring guy”, I called the store where the flooring was purchased and confirmed that this was an incorrect installation. Chip tried to say it was because it was over our garage, but it was clearly not right. Every step caused the floor to buckle. Chip finally agreed to send a flooring specialist out to look at it. He stated it was a very bad flooring installation and went outside to call Chip to give his recommendation. Chip agreed to bring the flooring specialist in to pull up the flooring and reuse what material he could and replace what had been nailed or damaged. The new subcontractor brought a crew of 4-5 guys and had it fully replaced in 2 days. We have realized a couple of months later that he did not get the flooring tight when he glued it and there are a few gaps between planks around the house where dirt gets in and is difficult to get out. After the flooring was replaced, we did a punch list of things that needed to be finished. I sent him the list and he stated he would come out and look at it with me. Chip came back a couple of days later to look at the punch list and we agreed on what still needed to be fixed. He then asked for us to pay him part of what was owed so he could pay his guys. We reluctantly agreed. He then sent someone out to address them. The guy he sent hit 3 of the 15 things and left without telling me he was leaving. Chip then sent another guy a few days later that I thought was going to finish, but when he got there, I was told he was only doing the clear coat on the baseboards. After another couple of weeks, Chip came back out to discuss what was left and asked for more money. My mistake was agreeing to give him a little more to the point that only about $800 was left. This was the last time he did any work inside my house. I tried to call him several times and received no answer. I texted him demanding that he come pick up the construction trash that had been in my back yard for 4 months and he didn’t respond until I sent him pictures of how much was left. He then proceeded to come get about half of it and left without talking to me. I ended up disposing of the rest of it myself. As it stands now, Chip has not received the last payment and has not completed the things he agreed needed to be finished. I had to do the rest of the punch list myself. When I gave Chip a deadline to complete the punch list or not get paid the rest of the money he questioned whether anything was left to do (despite me sending him a list of remaining items several times). He also did not respond whether he was going to do it or not and I have not heard back from him at all. All in all, most things had to be done twice and most of it is still not right. All along the way, Chip would complain about how much our job was costing him because of having to send out so many different people so many different times. Additionally, we had one of the first flooring guy’s helpers throw cigarette butts on our floor and there were a couple of contractors who were using very bad language in our home with our three year old upstairs, and we heard a few racist comments made when they thought we were not around. One day, a couple of the guys left for the day with our one manual garage door open that my wife did not know how to close, plus multiple doors unlocked and our garage door open and did not check in with my wife to tell her they were leaving, so she was then at home until I got off work at 1am with a toddler and a newborn and no way to lock up the garage door, plus it was a while before she realized they had left and was able to close and lock all the doors that were open. Various subcontractors would pull out and use my personal tools because they did not bother asking for the tools they needed from Chip or Chip did not provide them. One of my saws was damaged and I had to replace a part. I would not trust Chip to do even the smallest job in my house ever again.
I am looking for a good general contractor in the Milton area. Need to get some things done to our home:)
Let me know if anyone can refer someone! Thanks
