  it is an excellent idea Neil - I am sure there are many out there that have some really good usable advise - for my part the most successful alternative energy system to-date has been my bio-digester that I use to cook with ( can be used for water heating and other things - you can get a bio-gas generator)- I got it installed about 6 yrs ago and I know Agama (CT) have now got a much cheaper model that is also easier to install - all you need it a plumber and preferably some animal manure to add - this is a GREAT alternative to all gas requirements - it always fills up with gas and it is free, once you have it in place !!
