For those who use oil heating in Brooklyn, what do we need to know? As renters, our only experience was with natural gas which seems much simpler. Definitely do not think we have any budget to convert over right now. They currently use Approved Oil with a service contract at a locked in rate of $2.69/gallon. I called them up and they offered the same rate with a complimentary service contract for the year. Is the locked in rate a good idea? Is the service contract a good idea? Is Approved Oil a good supplier/delivery company? Are there better options? Please excuse our ignorance and thanks for any responses! I included a picture of our oil tank. maxwellimus replied:Hi - I just bought a place in bed Stuy in 2017 and had lots of work on my steam boiler system done. I am still using oil but luckily my boiler can take gas if I just change the burner. I use COD fuel and I have an oil guy Alex who I ask yearly to come and tune up my boiler before I fire it up. (Www.codfuel.com) BMB is the best on that website. I also perform maintenance myself by flushing the boiler periodically and adding solvents and chemicals so the boiler produces drier steam. I also treat my tank as well. Message me for more info.

standardalias replied:For oil i like to use codfuel.com you can price shop (I have called places to confirm the rates on the website match) and schedule a delivery online. I don't have a service contract and just buy oil as i need it. I used Oyster Bay Insurance Broker on the recommendation of a lawyer friend to find me my homeowners policy. They got me set up with a smaller provider that I never would have found on my own for $200 a year less than allstate or state farm. I haven't had to make a claim yet so i don't know how that will go. Congrats on your house.
dragonzim replied:I've used both Optimum and Fios. Both are overpriced. My recommendation would be to start with Fios and when they jack up your price after the first 2 years, switch to Optimum. For oil, I just use a local repair guy to come and do a servicing once a year and buy my oil from codfuel.com
