  Hello Brookville - We are looking for someone who can help us train our two Toy Australian Shepard dogs with their separation/travelling anxiety issues. We've been working with them as best we can with info from the internet and "The Dog Whisperer", but we feel unequipped to handle these specific anxiety issues. We've talked to the vet and the humane society, but no one seems to have an answer other than Prozac (which doesn't seem to work). Any suggestions that will point us in a better direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  CM's ideas on leadership may often be counter productive in a dog that truly has separation anxiety... and in some cases may make it worse. IMO.. And unless you have someone who can be with the dog's all the time, it is really hard. The first thing you need to figure out is if it is really separation anxiety.... Having a video camera to see the dog's behavior is pretty much necessary, as it is hard to tell form just the results (destruction or self mutilation, etc).   Get "Perfect Puppy in 7 Days" by Dr Sophia Yin via Dogwise.com and read it cover to cover prior to bringing puppy home. Every interaction you have with your puppy/dog is a "training session" be it intentional or unintentional.

  Yay I'm happy to hear your plans! We need more vets with a passion for behavior. :D Clickertraining.com and dogwise.com both have great dog books. "Click to Calm" is a fantastic book that lays out steps for behavior modification for aggressive dogs bu t it doesn't cover general canine behavior. Turid Rugaas' book "Calming Signals" covers canine body language in depth. Patricia McConnell is a go-to and I'd suggest Sophia Yin but I'm not sure she has a general behavior book. However, her book "Low Stress Handling" would be a great resource when you're in clinical practice.

  Kit - Sorry I didn't respond sooner, busy weekend! The Monks of New Skete are also punishment-oriented, dominance-based trainers (though in recent years they have stopped alpha-rolling dogs as science has proven it is both dangerous and highly ineffective). I do not recommend their work. If you're looking for good dog books, you can't go wrong on www.dogwise.com. They only stock postive-reinforcement, science-based literature, so even if you order at random you won't get something that teaches you to hurt your dog.   Kristi, check on dogwise.com. They have many new books coming out each month as well as the "old standards". You should be able to find anything you could possibly imagine as far as dog books (not novels, though they have some of those, too) from conformation to obedience to agility to flyball to tracking to breeding to individuals breeds, etc. Good luck and have fun looking through all the wonderful books they have.
