Midwives in the birmingham area?? Hey folks, using a throwaway here, because I'm so early in things that we haven't really told anybody yet.
I'm currently expecting my first child, and I'd REALLY like to use the services of a midwife. (yes, I know, legally they have to operate under the supervision of a doctor in this state.) Problem is, I CANNOT find any info at all about the local midwives. I was told that St Vincents has one on staff, but I haven't been able to find anything on their website about it. I even tried e-mailing several people at the Alabama Midwives Association, and haven't heard a word back.
Has anyone here used the services of a midwife, or know how I could get in touch with one??
EDIT: Just to clarify, I am not a crazy hippie. I just want to explore all my options so i can take the most well-rounded approack.

You can try contacting the Alabama Birth Coalition for information. They are few and far between, since they can't legally attend births. http://www.alabamabirthcoalition.org/ I also found this list, which is ONLY people located through the bcbsal.com provider finder: Delfos-Broner, Truus H CNM 1917 Clinic 908 20TH ST S BIRMINGHAM, AL 35205 205 934-1917 Specialties Midwife Dover, Eileen A CNM 832 PRINCETON AVE SW BIRMINGHAM, AL 35211 205 206-8477 Specialties Midwife Harrison, Eulynne CNM 832 PRINCETON AVE SW BIRMINGHAM, AL 35211 205 206-8477 Specialities Midwife FWIW, I delivered in April at Brookwood under an MD (Dr. Greg Banks), and I highly recommend him.
