  Polyurethane - http://www.waterlox.com/ Waterlox gym finish since you have dogs, as I recall. Some of the Belleau wood has a 50 year finish warranty with aluminum dioxide thrown in the finish to improve traction. I haven't used these, but have seen them recommended. If you go the tile route, the larger the tile the larger the grout line you will want. The wider the grout the more there is to keep clean, there are sealers that can be reapplied, periodically. Think about a color grout that will show less staining. Same thing with slate or natural stone. Both break glass more easily than wood, but accommodate dog claws better. Bamboo is very durable and attractive, plus it is renewable.
