They used a dangerous medication for off market purposes and it killed be 14 year old yorkie, they did not give full disclosure of the side effects, (death is the first listed side effect) instead I was told it was safe. I asked for a urine culture & sensitivity test, and they took her urine to send out, but they did not wait for the results, they gave her the injection that day, the whole point of sending it out is to determine the type of bacteria so the correct antibiotic can be used. Sometimes vets will start with their best guess antibiotic while waiting for the Culture & sensitivity test result to come back, to try to give the animal relief, as they can always change it if needed -once the results come in. But to give a long term antibiotic injection (one that stays in system for 65 days) that cannot be undone, with no knowledge of whether it is correct, is a negligent practice of medicine. One of the safest antibiotics on the market (sulfur) ended up being the best one to use and the one they gave was not the correct one. The drug insert clearly states "A sample of the lesion should be obtained for culture and susceptibility testing prior to beginning antimicrobial therapy." My dog had a bad reaction to this medication, she couldn't walk, she would fall over, wouldn't eat, weak, so I took her back in, in tears explaining what was going on, but they didn't take it seriously, they had attitude that I would even suggest that the injection caused these side effects, even after seeing the changes in her blood work, they told me it was a coincidence. Instead of helping my dying dog, I was told that it seems I don't trust what they did so they think it's time I go elsewhere! Their refusal to treat my dog for a documented adverse reaction and having attitude in the middle of a crisis, showing zero compassion was beyond upsetting and something I will never forget! The longterm injection they used and that ultimately cost my dog her life was only tested for animals that were well with deep skin lacerations, not older dogs with cancer, one of the documented adverse reactions to this drug is Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, which according to the necropsy report from Texas A&M, she died from IMHA & renal failure. The day she got the injection, I had her blood taken and her kidney values were fine and so was her HCT. IMHA requires very aggressive treatment and it's is notorious for causing secondary conditions in affected patients. The decreased oxygen delivery resulting from anemia can cause problems with internal organ functions, especially the liver and kidneys. I understand doctors make mistakes, but this doctor never once called to check on my dog, never said he was sorry, never tried to help and the other doctors in the clinic had the same attitude, they told me (as my dog is dying In my arms) that they stand behind what he did and showed zero compassion, the whole experience was nothing short of a nightmare! I would NOT recommend Memorial Town & Country Animal Clinic to anyone. These doctors have been around for a while so I guess that's why they have attitude, they think they are above making a mistake, all I wanted them to do is help my dog, but apparently their ego was too big to help. The drug they used has a short shelf life, maybe thats why they used it, because you lose money if you don't use it by the expiration date, that's the only reason I can possibly think of that they would use a drug for skin lacerations on my older yorkie with cancer, and not even wait, to find out if its the right one and if they were going to be so careless as to use this on a dog that already had health issues, then it seems like they would have at the very least used half a dose. I'm beyond saddened by this experience and if I can save one dog from going thru what we went thru, than my baby will not have died in vein!
