  A tragic example of why it's so important to choose your trainer wisely & understand their methods & qualifications :( I usually suggest you look for a trainer who is CPDT-KA certified and uses positive reinforcement, counter conditioning and desensitization methods and AVOID an uncertified trainer who uses aversive, dominance based or punishing method.

  Can anyone recommend a good dog trainer? I have a wonderful dog that didn't get socialized enough as a puppy and now has some protective aggression issues. I have tried calling and emailing Unlimited Obedience who was highly recommended and its been over a week and no call back or email reply. I just need some help teaching him that not all strangers are out to get him or our family. Thanks in advance!

  They should also be a member of the International Association of Pet Dog Trainers, International Association of Canine Professionals, and hopefully an AKC Canine Good Citizen certified evaluator.
