Can anyone recommend a local (Winsted or Torrington-based) car service or taxi service? We only have one car and sometimes need a Plan B for local appointments and whatnot.

NTD will get you to Torrington, where you can connect to Litchfield. The hours of operation are not particularly convenient. NTD's DIal-A-Ride has pick-ups in Winsted from 9:00 am, most often requiring a return to Winsted in time for the driver to be back in their depot in Torrington by 3 pm. There is sometimes extended service until 5:30-6:00 pm Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. Dial-a-Ride must be booked _at least_ a day in advance, and can be used only for service to and from Torrington. There is a service for trips further away through NTD, but this must be booked several weeks in advance (due to demand and limited staff resources), and again, your return to Winsted must be early enough for the driver to be back at the depot by 3 pm. This further-afield service may be limited to seniors and the disabled. I'm not sure. For more information, visit http://www.nwcttransit.com/index.html If you need to get to Hartford, there is the commuter bus. You must leave on either of the two morning departures which get you to Hartford more or less for 9:00 am, and must stay in Hartford until the buses leave around 5:00-5:30. The only car service I see around much is Valley Cab, dispatched from Plainville I believe.
