My in-laws dropped their three small dogs off at the K9 Cottages just a few miles from our vacation cabin last Saturday afternoon.
Monday morning we received a call letting us know that one of our dogs had died. They claimed that he was bitten in the leg by another little dog the night before, but was overall fine until the next morning when he began to show signs of distress and was taken to the vet, where they said he had passed away.
NO phone call was given when our dog was bit, and NO phone call was given when they were taking him to the vet.
Come to find out from the vet, he had died BEFORE he was ever brought in. The vet also offered to have an autopsy done, but K9 cottages refused to get one done.
After picking up the dogs, we took him to get an autopsy. This proved that he was actually killed by a larger dog biting him around his throat and suffered severe neck trauma and a painful death. Our small dog should have never been around a dog outside of his weight class in the first place.
We asked if our dog would have lived if he had been taken to the vet as soon as the injury occurred, and we were told there was a high possibility. But instead the K9 Cottages took it upon themselves to wait until it was too late. At the very least, they should have notified us and let us make the decision on whether or not to take him in.
I would also be cautious of the vet in association with this establishment as they said to have done an exam of our dog, but claimed to have not found the source of his injuries.
It is obvious that the K9 Cottages are trying to cover up their negligence with multiple lies. They even went to the extent to clean the blood off our dogs neck and keep his possibly blood soaked collar from us.
Not to mention our other two dogs we're visibly shaken by the traumatic experience and are slowly getting back to normal. Also, after only being there for 36 hours, they were filthy, smelled horrible and their fur was completely matted.
If you care about your fur babies at all, I beg of you to never let them stay here. We are entirely heartbroken and would hate for this to ever happen to another family.
