Pure Spice at 83rd and Division does awesome Hunan food. Get the goose hotpot, the dumplings and the spicy green beans. Chinese Delicacy, Wong's King, Ocean City, Best Taste, Good Taste, Wing Ming, EC Kitchen, Om Seafood (if you order seafood) and Taste of Sichuan are all quite good as well. There's plenty of good Chinese food in Portland, but you have to go to the places Portland's Chinese population lives to get it—that means the area between 82nd and 122nd Avenues. There used to be several quite decent places in Chinatown, but with the sole exception of Good Taste those businesses have all moved to be closer to their customers. I suspect many Portlanders have bad meals at good Chinese restaurants because we're constitutionally disinclined to ask questions. Those giant menus basically guarantee that there are as many misses as hits to be had, and the only way to guarantee you have a good meal is to ask the waiter about the kitchen's specialties.
