  There is a good humane society type shelter in Lakewood, Denver Dumb Friends League or Boulder Valley Humane Society, also Longmont (but in their case, they tend to hide the fact that a breed is in the pitbull family, because of prejudice of pitbulls and only let you know because of the ban in some cities and counties). Ever since we have owned dogs, we have always owned at least 2 at a time, it is nice for them to have companionship. Bring your existing dog with you and someone else to watch your dog, they don't allow other dogs until you find who you like.

  Boulder VAlley Humane Society, Denver Dumb FRiends League, I think there is a humane society in Lakewood, Specific breeds have puppy rescues and the Lifeline that Jolene Acevedo Erickson mentioned too. Don't buy from a puppy mill or pet store, unless it is Petsmart or someone that gets their dogs from a animal shelter.

  VERY IMPRESSED with Denver Dumb Friends League's LuLu Mobile, a traveling spay/neuter clinic. Took my stray/semi-feral female there on Thurs and for $10 she was spayed, given rabies/distemper shots, nails clipped, tattooed & ear-clipped (to show she has been "fixed"). The two vets on board were kind, informative, thorough and sincerely grateful to those of us there for taking care of our animals. Definitely worth the trip into Denver! Highly recommend!!
