I hired Jacob Tillotson of Hard Knox Carpentry to redo my front entryway, which was necessary for my new home grooming business. The project was to include cement steps down to the basement, a cedar deck with stairs up to the front door, a small gravel driveway, and a sidewalk from the front entry to the driveway. Work was completed during the summer of 2022.
However, the deck was built of pine 1 x’s instead of cedar 2 x’s, and I could tell that it was not well done. Jacob had failed to get the required building permit, but I called the inspector anyway and asked him to take a look. He came and gave me a long list of issues with the deck.
The inspector also said that the cement steps are not up to code, as the tread is too narrow. I noticed that there is no drain at the bottom of the stairs, which means water pools down there, right where I bring clean dogs out of my grooming salon. To top it all off, the driveway was put in the wrong spot.
After getting a quote from another contractor to redo everything correctly, I asked for a full refund because that is what it will cost to remove Hard Knox’s work and have it done properly. He refunded me for the deck but has refused to refund the rest, so now I will be out thousands of dollars due to Jacob’s shoddy workmanship, in order to tear out his mistakes so that it can be done correctly.
In mid-April 2023 I removed the stairs because they had cracked so badly they were no longer safe. It turns out the cement work was not done properly, causing it to sink so it is no longer level, and that is part of the reason that the stairs were falling apart so badly. Several of the screws had broken as well. Now I will have to have some of the cement removed in order to have a good quality deck put in. I have also had flooding in my basement caused by water puddling at the bottom of the stairs which leaked in under the door.
