  Oh you know I'll answer this -- your 'baby gear advisor' We have the Diono Radian. Faces rear until baby is like 35 lbs or something -- they're now recommending keeping babies rear facing until at least age 2. The narrowest car seat on the market. If you want to make sure it will install OK in your car, google the car make and "radian" and "carseat.org" and you'll find discussions on the carseat.org forum on your particular make and model. (I've also heard great things re: Britax car seats, but they are wider which is why we opted for the Radian).

  I always find interesting things on carseat.org. I think the basic Graco backless booster should be fine for travel and not too expensive. My parents have two that my nieces and nephews use when they visit and they seem to work well. My guy is still little so we have to haul a car seat, but we have a cheapo (with good safety ratings) for traveling because I don't want anything to happen to our expensive Britax seats. Also, I can't imagine dealing with a Britax car seat in the airport. They are way too big and heavy!
